La historia comienza 10 años en el futuro (del epílogo de DBZ).
Los personajes principales son Goku (apariencia de niño), Trunks, y Pan.
Sin embargo, aunque Goku es abuelo de Pan, él parece un niño de apenas 11 años.
Al parecer Pilaf y compañía reaparecen. Pilaf tiene el deseo de gobernar el mundo, y también desea llegar a ser más joven. Sin embargo, convierten accidentalmente a Goku en un niño, usando las "últimas esferas del dragón."
Aunque Goku ahora es un niño, es tan fuerte como antes, con la única excepción de que pierde su habilidad shunkan del idou (teleportation). El intentar volver a Goku de nuevo a normal y salvar a la tierra de su destrucción es la misión de los aventureros de Dragon Ball GT, un viaje que los lleve a las profundidades del espacio y a nuevas sorpresas.
Goku y sus amigos encuentran a nuevos enemigos en otros planetas y Goku se en contrará con un fuerte y nuevo enemigo "Baby", que fue creado por la raza de Tsufurujin para destruir a los Saiyajin. Goku incluso alcanza la el nivel 4 de Super Saiyajin. Más adelante, los aventureros de Dragon Ball GT tendran que derrotar a Super C17 y a los siete Dragones Malvados.
